The early 20th c. art scene is a time of subversive artistic practices, including the futurists, dada, and surrealism. They all wrote manifestos and published regularly on their actions. They all relied on publicity and controversy. They were all initially literary movements, initiated by writers or poets. Futurists wanted to abandon the past in the name of the machine. Dadaists: were horrified by the war, and wanted to locate some innocence within the horror, and used "childhood" as their metaphor. Surrealism: aims at freeing the mind and finding unspoiled ideas of the unconscious. Also interested in children"s art and art by the insane.
