Started with works like white painting (seven panels) Inluenced by abstract expressionists (color ields: asked de kooning for a drawing he could erase, orig had charcoal and oil, it was hard to erase. Bed: pillow stapled on canvas, sheets, might think of pollock, called it a combine . Monogram: angora goat, canvas on loor new approach, disrupted picture plane. Story: mass media imagery like hannah hoch, text and scale are important, put real world into paintings/combines. Target with plaster casts: encaustic and collage with objects, objects = body parts, 1955: civil rights, color and texture. Flag: encaustic: pigment with melted wax, applied while still hot, john"s canvas covered with newspaper before applying encaustic, not just an american lag. White flag: entirely the same but white, hints of color, civil rights, everyday being loaded with meaning, dada: everyday objects. Just what is it that makes today"s homes so diferent, so appealing: comic/low forms being incorporated into collages.
