Document Summary
Oxford: oxford university press. (chapter 4: pp 44-64) Music as a resource (functions of music: the first subheading of the chapter is music as a resource which is just a fancy way of saying how we use music . The five ways in which we use musically social are: birth to death, work to rituals, religious ceremonies, leisure, play. 3: controlled emotion expression and evocation of sentiment. Music as text: post-structuralism says that there is no one meaning to anything, that by interpreting our culture we can create new meanings. Rice does not mention the phrase the death of the author, but this is often used to illustrate this situation: the meaning intended by the creator of a work of art is only one meaning among many. We can argue for other meanings that the original creator was probably completely unaware of. In this view culture is a text which we try to interpret, or read in various ways.
