Saw himself as betraying his rnb roots: at one point, left jimi hendrix experience. Star spangled banner (1969: creates imagery of bombs and war, v amplified guitar. College educated middle aged ppl preferring art rock: rock from 60"s w/ avant-garde + classical influences, more experimental and extensive. Younger people (middle to working class) going for hard rock and heavy metal genres. Also existed: top 40 music for early teens. Teen music derivative of dance music-- not innovative, very simplistic. Funk (james brown), soul and rock fading from masses. Soul radio music for black audiences, extended albums. Fm for classical, art rock doing concept albums.
