In the early 1970s rock music was the main source of profit for the music industry. 1961: fm broadcasting began in us, 57 fm stations. 1965: fcc ruling forced fm stations to play different music from am stations. 1967: rise of alternative radio and progressive fm rock: played longer songs, even entire albums, mix formats. 1970: 688 fm stations: aor: album oriented radio aimed at white males 13-25 eg bands.
