NSE 13A/B Lecture 6: Week 6 of NSE13
Document Summary
Vital sign measurement: chapter 2, 4, 6 and 7. Pain originates from both the cns and pns and is a highly complex/subjective experience. Nociceptors are specialized nerve endings located within the skin that detect painful sensations in the pns and transmit to cns by two primary sensory fibers: stimulated directly by trauma or injury. Indirectly by chemical mediators released from site of tissue damage. A fibres are myelinated and larger in diameter and transmit localized, short-term, sharp sensational pain signal rapidly to cns. Pain is based on its origin, classified as nociceptive, neuropathic, or both. Neuropathic pain is caused directly by a lesion or a disease affecting the somatosensory nervous system; damage to the nerve pathway at any point along the nerve; burning or shoot pain, often more intensified at night. Referred pain originates in one location but is felt at another site.
