Testes develop in abdominal cavity near kidney during gestation. Testes descend along inguinal canal into scrotum prior to birth. The presence of palpable testes is a normal newborn finding. Puberty begins b/w ages 91/2 to 131/2, takes ~3 years. Refers to sexual maturity ratings in boys (tanner"s stages of development) Adults & older adults: men have no definite end to fertility. Sperm decreases at 40 y/o but continues development to 80s or 90s. Scrotal contents hang lower, rugae decrease, scrotum pendulous. Testes decrease in size & are less firm on palpation.
