Week 7: quality of life, illness, and pain. Mutable: contextual & fluid/dynamic, developmental considerations/stage of life. Multi-dimensional with related terms and components: life satisfaction, well-being, functional status, happiness, health, eg. I"m happy today, but my overall life sucks. 5 perspectives of qol **: philosophical human existence good life , ethical sanctity of life, economic economic growth, gnp (gross national product), rise in life expectancy, sociological - relationships, psychological self-appraisal and fulfilling life goals. Perception of qol**: personal and influenced by development. Adult literature: neglected developmental changes, language level, children"s construction of health and illness. Technology and prolonging of life: eg. advanced organ transplant tech. /skill. Assessment of physical and mental health: physical and emotional function, symptoms and disease processes. Assumption: qol worsens as health status declines: qol may not be directly associated with health status, but decline in qol may not be an inevitable consequence of disease progression. Iow: individuals with extensive health problems may experience good qol.
