Document Summary

Bladder becomes distended, detrusor muscle contracts & urethral sphincter mechanism relaxes, allowing urine to be released. Average adult bladder holds approx 500cc & is emptied 5-7 times per day. Micturition reflex - bladder fills, sensory impulses sent to sacral spinal cord & relayed to the pontine micturation centre, relays message back to initiate detrusor muscle contraction, sphincter relaxation, & bladder emptying. Methods to promote urinary elimination: provide privacy, promote normal positioning, maintain normal habits, routine toileting, promote adequate fluid intake, allow sufficient time, assist with pericare & handwashing, continence training exercises. Factors that influence urination: disease conditions, fluid balance, medications, surgical procedures, psychological factors, hygiene, growth & development, psychosocial & cultural. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (bph) enlarged prostate: enlargement of prostate gland leads to pressure on the neck of the bladder, urinary retention, frequency, incontinence, dribbling & uti, difficultly initiating voiding & maintaining urinary stream.
