Prescription medication misuse among adolescents with severe mental health problems in ontario canada. Purpose: examine the prevalence and explore factors that influence prescription medication misuse among adolescents with severe mental health problems. Major problem with current literature is how to define and measure the concept no universal definition of misuse. Definition used in this article over-use of recommended/prescribed dosage, or using prescribed medication for a purpose other than its intended use within the last three months . Perception that they are not as dangerous as other drugs. Age, race and ethnicity, level of education, housing situation, abuse and trauma, and psychopathology. Misuse of prescription medication can worsen psychiatric symptoms, lead to relapse, increase rehospitalization. Recognizing the factors is vital for prevention and the development of appropriate intervention. Females were 2. 19x more likely to misuse prescription. The number of admissions was positively associated with prescription medication misuse. Emotional, physical and sexual abuse were associated with greater misuse.
