Document Summary

Data must be translated into concepts that can be measured, observed or recorded. Collecting data is a vital part of a nurse"s role. Choosing the right data collection method for the job is critical. The researcher must choose the data collection method that matches the study purpose. It is like the old saying, garbage in, garbage out . Without appropriate data collection methods, valuable time and money can be lost because good information was not collected, calling the validity of research findings into question! Take advantage of existing information, which con- serves time and resources. Historical research -relies on available data in the form of written, narrative records of the past: diaries, letters, newspapers, minutes of meetings, records. New data-self-reports, observations, and bio- physiologic measures. Research data can be collected in a highly structured manner: the same information is gathered from all participants in a comparable, prespeci- fied way.
