The legal right to know came from moral philosophy. A person has the right to know about risk imposed on others. It is broad and doesn"t state the requirement that the worker has to understand the information. Allows suppliers to keep trade secrets by making claim from disclosure: canada labor code. It is a duty to know not a right. Elements of whmis: whmis triad - all canada, labels, msds, worker instruction, extras ontario. Assessments to determine if materials are hazardous community right to know eventually physical hazards. Legal duties under whmis: outside workplace- importers, producers, suppliers of hazardous material. Inside workplaces- employers, supervisors, corporate officers, workers, jhsc. Suppliers must: classify information into 6 whmis classes, provide supplier label on hazardous material going into the workplace, provide msds with hazardous material going to the workplace. Supervisors must: advise workers on hazards, also be familiar with whmis requirements and all hazards of the job.
