The previous material was all about compensating workers once they have been injured. This week, we start the review of prevention. These pieces of legislation deal with preventing injuries from occurring in the first place (the cheapest injury to compensate is the one prevented) The provincial legislation is enabling (meaning, it gives the officials the authority to enforce the law) the specific applications are covered in regulations. Review the notes, especially a paper written by peter strahlendorf (pages 3 32) Ontario has 150,000 workplaces, with 5 million workers but 400 mol inspectors (not enough to prevent workplace injuries) The focus of prevention must be in the workplace. Local knowledge and history of the workplace and work practices is crucial to accident prevention. The model in the ontario legislation is that everyone can cause an accident, so everyone should be involved in preventing them. Everyone has a role, everyone is involved, 100% of the time.
