PHL 214 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Relativism, Peer Pressure
Document Summary
Common impediments to critical thinking come from how/what we think. How: self interested- accepting only because coincides with your interests group thinking- peer pressure, stereotyping (drawing conclusions) What: beliefs re: nature of truth and knowledge subjective relativism social relativism. Relativism: proposition can be true or false but it depends on person or group. Subjective: if i believe the sun is shining, it is shining e. g. taste- not either true or false, therefore not dealing with statements, so subjective relativism doesn"t apply, vs. how many beans in jar has a legit answer. About beliefs--there are things that fall outside beliefs, e. g. i like chocolate ice cream isn"t a belief. Social practice of kissing when meeting someone--not t/f, it"s a culture saying we like doing that . T/f only arises if everyone should do it because it is right intolerant- we have it right--we are always right.
