PHL 333 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Nicomachean Ethics, Whiteboard
Document Summary
Philosophical contemplation - one of the distinctive things that make us human. Humans are looked at not only as just a body or person, but everything in our existence. To understand these objects, one must understand the human first. Eg. understanding a whiteboard, one must understand humans. To understand human nature is to understand the world around us. Not in the sense of morally good. A fulfilling life; not telling you what to do and what not to do. Greeks generally believe things have an end/inner goal to strive for. Eg. a tomato plant has the potential to be a flourishing plant; yet also has the potential to be weak, does not give any fruit. By nature, the goal of a tomato plant is to give fruit; that dying plant does not live up to that. Facing challenges is something all humans do. How we deal with them is what shapes us. Being courageous is better than being cowardly.
