PHL 333 Lecture 2: PHL 333 week 2
Document Summary
Happiness is the ultimate end, pursue it for the sake of itself. Pleasure people who seek pleasure are slavish (life is not up to you, you can"t decide what you find pleasurable), and like a fatted cow. Honour reputation; being praised as valuable in the eyes of others. Your value is fragile if you rely on this for happiness; no control over honour. Wealth you don"t want wealth for its own sake, you want it to do other things with it (not a complete end), e. g. some want houses, cars, trips, investments, etc. Virtue first sign of a complete end to aristotle. Some people are naturally virtuous i. e. professional athletes, musicians, painters, etc. Excel at the art of human living. Happiness cannot be something you can be given or potentially taken away. Doesn"t mean having a smile on his face; i. e. a happy person dealing with the loss of a family member without affecting his life.
