PHL 333 Lecture 4: PHL 333 week 4
Document Summary
The kind of thinking that one does in philosophy is purely an activity that takes place in itself not dependant on any other object. Courage is a lesser form of virtue than thinking (philosophical contemplation). The power of your desires (pleasure) overtakes you and makes the choice on your behalf/puts you on the track to do something. Not unwilling but not a result of a choice. The only way you can have a character is as a result of your actions which are a result of a choice you made. We can only be genuinely happy when we"re actively pursuing virtue. It"s second nature to do the beautiful thing because it"s a habit. Develop the capacity to make these decisions for themselves. What is it that i"m going to do that will be the beautiful thing. The virtue of character decides on the end; the virtue of practical judgement decides on the means.
