PHL 504 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Recursive Definition, Canadian Art
Document Summary
Last week review: weitz"s position: art has no essence, art is a family resemblance concept. Mandelbaum argues that art is not a family resemblance concept. He says we cannot use family resemblance. He says art has essence, it can be creative and innovative. Weitz was right about one thing= searching for the essence of art has been a big persistent failure. Mandelbaum tries to prove a new direction for the project of philosophy of art, he says we need to look in a different place for the essence of art where we have traditionally looked. Against weitz, mandelbaum says that people can look alike but it does not mean they are family. There is a necessary requirement to belong to a family but that requirement is being related. ie. origin from same parents. Manifests: features that we can look at and see. Relation feature: how the person is related to some other person, this is a manifest you cannot see.
