PHL 605 Lecture 3: Dostoevksy Full Lecture Set
Document Summary
Ivan"s atheism: he is trying to change alyosha"s views on god, at times it seems that ivan does not believe in god period. However in others, he seems to accept god but not accept the world that god has created: he refuses to accept that god is good. Ivan has no patience for this response, he does not believe that this does any- thing to make the suffering better that many experience. He dares alyosha that if he believes this, to go talk to the mother of the 8 year old boy and tell her that this is all right, god has a bigger plan for her. He calls into question what progress will mean when based on rationale, the same way he doubts the one based on religion. Ivan puts his faith in reason, and some people will get hurt on the way, but at the end of this process everything will work out.
