Be conscious of making own explanation as he often only offers partial explanation. Own explanation must be defended and there are many other explanations that exist as well. Goal to challenge and motivate people by theatre. Possible criticism of theatre praised by aristotle (catharsis and then leaving to go back to daily life), opposite of what brecht wants to do. Theatre is a performance based artwork and a business. Playwrights tend to see their role in theatre as producer of art for audience, but if plays don"t make money (don"t bring in audiences, not what audience wants), then they aren"t hired. This is a problem because reality is this is the way they make their livelihood so while playwrights aren"t actually in charge. What is made is what can be sold. Brecht mindful of business aspect as he knows this is the only way his plays will be produced.
