Civic commons - where we do together what we cant do alone. Civic assets - are not only about being public but the way that they serve. What are they good for: streets = connection, streets - who are they good for? they are designed for. This is problematic because it prioritizes one user over any other. 20th century street design prioritized the car. Commerce - commercial life of the city. Events - what roles they play at different times (pride, sports, protests) Streets comprise more than 80% of public spaces in cities. Toronto has about 5600 km of streets. Almost one quarter of toronto"s total land area is covered by streets.
