PLN 103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Gastrointestinal Tract, Serous Membrane, Abdominal Wall
Document Summary
The level of digestion will depend on external factors that regulate the digestive process. Fat diet then going off of it will have a major impact on all the enzymes responsible for the digestion of fat. The alimentary canal or gastrointestinal (gi) tract is the continuous muscular digestive tube that winds through the body. Amount of enzymes and hormone release will depend on rate of digestion and amount of food consumed. Six functions: ingestion, mechanical processing, digestion, secretion, absorption, excretion. Brain prepares the gi track which releases enzymes. Secretion: the release of water, acids, enzymes, buffers and salts. Absorption: movement of organic substrates, electrolytes, vitamins and water. Excretion: removal of waste products from body fluids. Between parietal and visceral tissues is lots of fluid to support and protect gi track. The lining of the gi tract: safeguards surrounding tissues against: low ph"s in the environment, mechanical stresses, bacteria ingested with food, corrosive digestive acids and enzymes.
