Greek soldiers were fighting strong because they had something to lose- athenian democracy. If athens was so powerful because of its democracy then why did it lose its battles with. For athenian democracy- definition of justice was equality- equality of all citizens, irrespectal of your social status, class, you have opportunity to participate in democracy, be elected to office etc. Plato says because justice just was equated with principle of democratic equality, plato"s starting point is to redefine meaning of justice entirely. Plato adopts format an style socratic method, plato"s standing and mentor was socrates, Socrates is often sited for popularizing socratic method- i ask you a question, get ball rolling, what is the meaning of justice. Discussion is occurring in plato"s academy- plato started an institution that is a think tank for like mind philosophers, young people to study at defeat of plato etc. Plato initiates dialogue to get to a conclusion of justice.
