Has to do with violence, monopoly of violence and state, state does not sound like nice entity, power to tax people within that geographic area- douglass north. Control of violence within some territory- tilly. Common elements- give territory (some piece of land) and idea that state can use force to control people in geographical area. All states use coercion, force and violence. Looks like a state but has lost its power to coerce and force population. Idea is that state lost control of this ability to coerce people with threat of force or force itself. Contractarian view of the state- social contract. Predatory view of the state- not about relations with other states but about relations with people of the state.
