Why are cities growing at a rapid pace especially in developing countries: rural to urban migration, transnational migration. What are slums: the un has defined slums as an area that combines to various extends to following characteristics: Inadequate access to safe water: poor structural quality of housing, overcrowding. Physical and legal characteristics of slums: densely populated, housing units have been constructed on land that the occupants have no claim to, housing it not in compliance with current planning and building regulations. Inadequate provision of basic public service such as electricity, water, garbage, collection, healthcare services, schools etc. Social dimensions typically associated with the term slum: poverty, squalor, chaos, overcrowding, crime, drugs, prostitution, violence, despair. Rethi(cid:374)ki(cid:374)g the social di(cid:373)e(cid:374)sio(cid:374)s usually associated with slu(cid:373)s : neighborhood, community, distinct culture/identity, entrepreneurship, perseverance. Different understandings of the slum produce different policy responses: heavy policing, demolitions-with or without compensation, dispersing slum communities-in some cases, slumdwellers might be moved into p7ublic/subsidized housing.
