Capitalism & democracy: development of western, representative democracy has been intertwined with capitalism, a capitalist economy in uences political systems (vice versa) in a number of ways: Political con icts : main con ict is right wing (conservative, low taxes, less government involvement) v. s. Left wing (ndp, high taxes, more government involvement) but also included religion, languages, identity. In the 21st century, it moved to iron, steel to automobile & telecommunications at low exchange. Manufacturing employment declined as technology advanced and employment moved to service based jobs (health care, public administration: free trade. No barriers to trade around countries to encourage giving consumers wider range of goods with lower prices. But, labour interests often resist free trade. Nafta agreement establishes a high level of economic organization in na + wto establishes global rules of trade, lowering barriers and procedures for dispute settlements. Role of government in economy: business regulation.
