The Nation
- Institution of global authority
- The nation is a group of people with common identity
o Can be based on
▪ Race
▪ Religion
▪ Language
▪ History
▪ Ethnicity
- Historically, people lived very isolated lives, usually identified with their families and
their village
- The ideology of nationalism comes from the idea of nation
o It is a psychological attachment to a group
o Could be in a form of pride
o It is the desire for sovereignty
▪ A small group of people that is controlled by a larger group of people, the
smaller group would like to seek their own independence. They want to
be their own nation
• Ex. Quebec – sovereignty movement
o Nationalist belief
▪ That people need to be their own nation to achieve sovereignty and they
a’t reah that goal if they’re part of a igger group of people
• Quee atig a oly Freh shool syste ut sie they’re a
part of Canada, they need to integrate English in it
o Nationalism breaks nations apart
▪ Slovakia and Czechoslovakia
o 2 types of nationalism
▪ Ethnic
• Beliefs that your identity comes from the group you are in
depending on their race, culture, religion
• Could be dangerous when a group thinks their superior, this
attitude when it extreme could cause conflict
o Germans and Hitler
▪ Civic
• Political ideas with political symbols/ideals
• Different people from different ethnic groups
o United States: very patriotic and nationalistic
▪ Their nationalism is based on the constitution of
their political symbol even though they have
different religions and different ethnic groups living
there, they all identify with the idea of Americans
and the American dream.
