Little Miss Sunshine
impact of the media on young girls, self image of them, sense of what is real
in the beginning they show a close up of Olives face, her glasses show a reflection of a
pageant as if she is in the pageant
documentary elements, t he film challenges the nor ms of Hollywood, media and its
neighbouring societies
be the mom let people be who they are, not fall into what the society wants and expects
Duane(older brother), father, grandfather, olive and mother(Cheryl) and frank
father is not happy to see Frank (there is awkwardness between them)
home is messy, to show how all their lives are in turmoil, and disorganized, there is no
sense of unity and everyone is busy doing their own things
nobody is talking to each other
worked together as a family to get the car working
grandfather was supportive of Olive when she didnt want the ice-cream and when the
father lost his shares

the grandpa knew that people were going to be shocked when they saw Olives
performance, because he said “were going to blow them away”
why didnt we feel humiliated for Olive
oshe acts like a kid, the rest are acting mature while she is enjoying herself
oshe isnt aware of the sexual implication/images she is giving out
oshe is always wearing red, which makes her stand out from the rest
oWiggling her behind” is satisfying because ……….
oThe rest are doing what they are expected to do, they are reproducing the images
of the media, on how they should be
oOlives strip routine is showing whats the difference in the rest of the girls acts,
they are portraying sex as well, for example walking in afierce” and “sexy”
manner in the bathing suitthey have forced/fake smiles while Olive has her
simple innocent smile from her heart
The media is creating an imagine that does not have any weight under it to support it
Rules/Norms
1. The 9 step program by Richard (father) he is buying into the nor m of the
society, he is depicted as being oppressive in the family
a.Olive asks Frank what happened, but Richard tries to stop the
discussion and calls Frank asick man” not only because he gave up
and tried to commit suicide but also because he is gay
