Colony 1) New France 1497-1763
France developed New France (Quebec) as a base to exploit natural resources for trade.
- Immigrantion to settle in New France as a secondary priority
- Immigration and settlement was 1. A means of reinforcing claim to territory. 2) a way to provide
food and basic supplies needed to support the fur trade.
- French government policy 1) Encourage emigration from France. 2) encourage large families
special allowance for families with a lot of children. 3) Fines for younge men and women who
did’t marry at an early age.
- 1700 population of New France consisted of 12,000 French immigrant plus 4100 slaves (1700
