PSY 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Substantia Nigra, Myelin, Peripheral Nervous System
Document Summary
Concept of plasticity: the central and peripheral nervous system, mapping the brain. Use research findings to improve health and well-being. Age of onset is usually 40-70yrs; most common is in 60"s. Diagnosed by physical symptoms; appearance, changes in walking. Is chronic- persists over a long period of time. Is progressive- usually symptoms gets worse over time. Life expectancy is same as healthy population, but someone with pd may develop other illness that may affect life expectancy. No one can predict which symptoms will affect which individual. 25% ppl who are first relatives w/ pd patients have higher chances of being diagnosed. There are other factors that affect chances of getting fd. Dopamine: a neurotransmitter- chemicals that pass impulse from one neuron to another. A pathway refers to connected neurons that send chemicals to different parts of the brain. In pd, nerve cells in the part of the brain (substantia nigra) that produces dopamine start to decrease in number.
