Scientific study makes systematic observations, look for patterns, generate new predictions based on what you"ve observed. Psychologists makes inferences about the mind based on behaviour (p. 6) First psychology research lab established in 1879 by william wundt in germany. G. stanley hall first north american lab (1883) James mark baldwin first canadian lab (1891) Since the ancient greeks, philosophers speculated about thought and behaviour. Are we born with knowledge of the world? (nature) or does all knowledge come from experience? (nurture) Early psychologists wanted to apply more empirical methods. Psychologists were also interested in insights from other sciences, especially medicine. Eg. , discovery of broca"s area in tan"s brain in 1861. No loss of speech comprehension or mental function.
