Psy 102, introduction to psychology lecture 5. Sensation and perception: definitions, sensation input of what we"re receiving from the physical world. Detection of physical energy by our sense organs. Sense organs are eyes, ears, skin, nose, & tongue: perception mental interpretation of that input. The way the brain interprets this physical stimulation. True negative: sensation, transduction the conversion of physical energy (e. g. daylight) into electrical signals that the neuron can interpret. Inattentional blindness it easy to miss something that we are not attending. The visual system: light and vision humans can see light (electromagnetic energy) with wavelengths b/w. Important for crisscross because information is to be synthesized simultaneously: depth perception ability to perceive space in 3 dimensions, monocular cues help us to see where something is located in a stationary scene. Is depth perception learned or innate: gibson & walk"s visual cliff study table edge with glass cover, and saw if babies would crawl out.
