The scientific study of the mind, brain, and behavior. The science of behavior and the factors that influence it. The abc"s of psychology: affect, behavior, cognition. Affect: feelings and emotions, either positive affect (love, happiness), negative affect (anger, sadness, fear, guilt) Cognition: thoughts, mental processes, decision making (memory) All three influence each other equally, each has a effect on the other. Two broad categories: examines how the mind works (basic research), utilize the research in everyday (applied research) 5 main challenges: human behavior is difficult to predict, psychological influences are rarely independent, individual difference among people, people influence one another (reciprocal determinism, behavior is shaped by culture (emic vs. approaches) Antidote for pseudoscience: think scientifically, separate science from pseudoscience. Scientific skepticism: a willingness to. , keep an open mind to all claims, accept claims only after researchers have subjected them to careful scientific tests.
