PSY 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Axon Terminal, Neuroglia, Oligodendrocyte
Document Summary
Neurons: the brains communicators: neurons are the on/off switches in our brain, specialize in communication with each other. Neuron components: cell body (soma): centre of neuron , makes materials needed by neuron, dendrites: branchlike extension that receives information from other neuron"s and signals it on, axons: tails of the neuron that spread out from the soma. Nerutransmisson: communication is chemical and in order for nt to be released their must be lock&key, some nt excite (lion chain you) others inhibit (drinking tea, each nt has a role in the brain & body. Types of neurotransmitters: glutamate: excitatory, learning & memory (lion is coming an your nts excite, gaba: inhibitory, learning, memory & sleep, acetylcholine: arousal, selective attention & sleep. Neurons connect to muscle cells to release actetycholine allowing to trigger movement. (get you triggered to run from lion: monoamines: contain one amino acid. cognitive & emotion. Dopamine: rewarding experiences when we accomplish goals , decision making and behaviour.
