PSY 105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Reuptake, Oligodendrocyte, Skeletal Muscle
Document Summary
Six principles of critical thinking: ruling out rival hypotheses. Important alternate explanations should be considered: correlation vs. causation. Can we be sure a causes b: falsifiability. Can the claim be disproven: replicability. Possible to duplicate scientific findings: extraordinary claims. Is the evidence as convincing as claims: occams razor. An explanation for a large number of findings in the natural world. So we set up experiments to find out. The entire group that is of interest to the researchers. A portion of any population that is selected for the study. Randomly choosing a sample from a population. Unexpected difference that exists between a true score and an obtained score. The variability in responses is due to unknown factors. This is true no matter what we"re measuring. To control for random error we use averaging. We want to avoid subjective impressions at all costs. Systematic errors in thinking that can lead to confidence in false conclusions.
