Document Summary

Prejudice: negative judgments of groups of people (valence: bad thoughts) Discrimination: behaviours or differential treatment of groups of people. Stereotypes: associations with groups of people (no valence: positive/negative/neutral) Ingroup (our group) vs outgroup (any other group) Can occur on any dimension race, gender, age, etc. Explicit: deliberate (cid:862)i do(cid:374)"t like (cid:271)la(cid:272)k people(cid:863) (they know they are prejudiced) Implicit: automatic associations between groups & positivity/negativity (not always consciously aware of them) Subtle behaviours we are less in control of nonverbal language. Some evidence that explicit and implicit prejudices guide different behaviours: not socially desirable to report explicit prejudices but biases still suspected. Appearance-(cid:271)ased sig(cid:374)als of (cid:862)outsider(cid:374)ess(cid:863) used to ide(cid:374)tif(cid:455) da(cid:374)ger, other(cid:374)ess. Interracial interactions: most people feared appearing prejudiced in modern times, not having much contact with people of other groups may be worse. Can be mentally exhausting if people self-monitor to avoid appearing prejudiced. Similar to racism but not as driven by fear/anxiety & women are in all groups.
