PSY 217 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Object Permanence, Cognitive Map, Mental Rotation
Document Summary
Tolman"s studies of rats introduced the idea of cognitive maps. Cognitive map - mental representation of the environment around us. Lynch (1960) had people: draw sketch maps of cities, describe routes, list vivid elements. Lynch found 5 common features: paths, edges, districts, landmarks, nodes. Appleyard (1970) had people draw sketch maps of venezuela. Found 2 common themes: routes - called them sequential maps , surveys - called them spatial maps . Egocentric navigation requires updating your current position. Dead reckoning: keeping track of where you are by: Allocentric - relative to external features (bird"s eye view) Allocentric navigation doesn"t require you to update and keep track of where you are. Allocentric navigation involves cues from the environment: Allocentric orientation is based off of egocentric experience and layout cues. Ex. decide what we view as due north based on what we see in front of us. Iv - participants studied layout of objects from aligned and misaligned views.
