Emotion: children are emotional beings right from birth. Interest, distress, disgust, contentment (at birth, linked to biological functions/reactions) Anger, sadness, joy, surprise, fear (2-7 months, requiring a sense of interpretation) Self conscious emotions: embarrassment (only when parents are present), pride, guilt, shame (requires a sense of self and sense of the environment around them) Positive emotions (first clear sign of happiness through smiling) 3 - 8 w: smiles directed to external stimuli. 3 m (6 - 7 w): social smiles, laughing. 7 m: smiles more to familiar people (a distinction is made) 2 y: clown around and make others laugh. School age: acceptance by peers and achieving goals leads to happiness. Ex: the still face paradigm: children will become upset when their mothers have no emotions. Negative emotions (first clear sign is generalised stress) 2 m: anger/sadness from distress/pain (more differentiated types of cries) Non distinctive facial expressions (they may show the same expressions)
