PSY 302 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Cerebral Hemisphere, Cerebral Cortex, Occipital Lobe
Document Summary
Cortex (cerebral cortex) the outer layers of brain in humans and other mammals: could be size of 4mm. Sulci (sulcus) are grooves on the cerebral cortex. Gyri (gyrus) are folds or hills on the cerebral cortex. Lobes: major areas of the cerebrum (cortex and subcortical regions) are associated with general categories of behavior. Temporal lobe - main fxn = emotion -- however the lobes are interconnected and everyone is involved to a certain degree. Frontal lobe- primary motor cortex- involved in executive fxn - deciiosn making, planned movement. Association areas: lie between major sensory and motor areas, processing and integrating input from there. Corpus callosum: a dense tract of nerve fibers, enables the two hemispheres to communicate. Commissure fibers also links the two hemispheres- not just the corpus callosum. Cerebral lateralization: specialization of the brain hemispheres for different modes of processing: older adults lose the lateralization ability.
