Language characteristics - flexible, productive and inventive (only 45 sounds in english language but can combine to create trillions of sentences etc. ) Phonology: study of phonemes which are the basic sounds of language rules exist for combining phonemes ex. Pragmatics: practical aspects of language, how to use. Metalinguistic language: knowledge of language and its properties. Nonverbal signals: signals that give meaning to spoken words ex. Before language: the prelinguistic period (10-13 months): Perceptual narrowing - better at differentiating phonemes than adults until 7 months at. High pitch endings excite interest & low pitch ending soothes them. Like to hear people with the same prosody as them. Figuring out which are the separate words in a sentence. When something is stressed more they believe it is the start of the word.
