Stereotypes generalization of a group of people. Positive stereotype asians art smart, gays are fashionable, woman are nurturing, men are assertive/aggressive (not necessarily positive though) Negative stereotype arabs are terrorists, jews are rich, women/asians can t drive, old people are stupid. Self-protective = x group is bad because of this and your group is better (superior to other groups) Primary goal of humans = boost their self-esteem. Eye-witness testimony (same-race bias in which we can"t distinguish other races) *know assimilation & contrast = out-group homogeneity test. Stereotypes registered around early as age 7-8 (gender stereotypes). Media + environmental factors (exposure to a group majority that is not your group) Self-fulfilling prophecy = critiquing/hovering over a certain type of person and evaluating them (creates anxiety and mistakes are made) and boom stereotype is supported *set a trap basically. Interpersonally act different with mentally ill (talking differently, extralinguistic information, fear, avoidance) = reciprocal behaviour back to you creates anxiety.
