PSY 308 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Blind Experiment, Pseudoscience, Descriptive Statistics
Document Summary
Scientific research: investigating techniques, acquiring new knowledge or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. Based on hypothesis testing e. g. biology-study of living things; physics, chemistry. Factors that influence your behaviour: socio-economic, environment, culture, emotions, genes, temperature, etc. (some of these can be put in bio or in social) Multiply determined since there are plenty factors that interact to define psychology. Very rigorous and use a lot of hypothesis testing. Theory: overarching explanation for some system/function of the world. Already supported by evidences. e. g. darwin"s theory of evolution-- already supported by scientific evidences. Hypothesis: primitive state (not a random guess) --a specific prediction based on a theory or current situation. Educated and it is a prediction: why do (cid:449)e procrasti(cid:374)ate? (cid:894)for(cid:373) a theory(cid:895) Theory-distractions use of technology- time spent on the computer we tend to do other priorities first. Current state of mind- not in the mood of doing the task.
