Document Summary
Communication with a neuron measuring electrical potentials of axons. Cell membrane: what it looks like. Neurons and glial cells are packed tightly together but never touch. Fluid is like water salt, other chemical substances that are dissolved (charged particles or ions) sodium, chloride, potassium. Intracellular fluid (cytoplasm) is also water, concentration of substance inside and outside are different. Same types of substances, its this differences that provides source of energy for electrical signalling. Ion gated channel open and close in response to change of polarity change in inside and outside of cell. Some channels stay open all the time, some remain closed. Membrane is selectively permeable some can enter, some can leave, some don"t go anywhere. Other type of channel potassium-sodium pump: ion proteins that act as pumps, certain exchanges require energy to move, membrane spanning protein. Ex: sodium doesn"t move freely and only way to let it move it to sodium potassium pump exchange ions inside and out.
