People believe that there is only one cause to a disorder but it is more likely that there are many possible ideologies for a disorder. Multidimensional models of abnormal behavioral: biological factors. Gregor mendel (dominant vs. recessive genes) talking about how genes influence physical development: new research says they can also impact not just physical but psychological functioning. Genetic structures of cells may change as a result of learning (kendel) Diathesis: a biological vulnerability (something about your makeup makes it easier to later develop a disorder) Stress model: effects of the environment on the subject: so: gene environment correlation model. You could have vulnerability but never experience this without an environmental stress incident. Ex: schizophrenia: people have a vulnerability and at the age of 20 (a very stressful point) the disorder appears. Caspi (2003): serotonin transporter gene: long (l) and short (s) allele, looking at depression and how this transporter gene may function as a vulnerability.
