PSY 605 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Angioplasty, Ace Inhibitor, Heart Failure
Document Summary
Behavioural cardiologist = study of the psychology of cardiology. A primer on the cardiovascular system and cardiovascular disease: Carries oxygen and nutrients to cells, and waste products from cells via the blood. Circulation occurs through pumping of the myocardium (the heart: myocardium lati(cid:374) for (cid:862)heart (cid:373)us(cid:272)le(cid:863) In normal blood pressure the pressure is: 120 systolic/80 diastolic pressure. Formed elements (erythrocytes, leukocytes, & platelets: erythrocytes- red blood cells, leukocytes- white blood cells, platelets- blood clotting. Arteriosclerosis: sclerosis = latin or greek for hard, any narrowing or hardening of the arteries, usually the arteries are flexibly and rubbery/elastic. Myocardial infarction occurs: blockage in the heart arteries that causes heart attacks, death of myocardial tissue or blockage of arteries. Congestive heart failure: caused when atherosclerosis or atherosclerosis (mostly atherosclerosis) is so severe that the heart cannot pump very well anymore, this can be disabling because it can cause weakness and difficulty breathing. Stroke disrupted blood flow to brain (cid:894)(cid:862)(cid:271)rai(cid:374) atta(cid:272)k(cid:863)(cid:895)
