PSY 605 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, Reinforcement
• Theories of Health Behaviour and Adherence
• Behavioural Theory
• It is Based o “kie’s 1953 opeat oditioig
• Acc to behv theory we want to:
• Increase adaptive behaviours - in this case: increase health behvs ex increase healthy diet,
medication adherance
• 2 ways in which we can increase behv:
• You do something and the behv is more likely to happen bc of what you did:
reinforcement
• There are 2 types of reinforcement
• Positive reinforcement (rewards) - if you receive a stimulus like, the behv continues
ex. If working with diabetic teenagers, our goal is to help them increase their use of
insulin - how to increase their use? You give them a chart and if they take the shot
when required then we give them a reward ex. Free movie ticket
• How do you reinforce an adult though?
• Negative reinforcement (decrease symptoms) if you don't like going to the doc then
instead if you can show that you can keep your blood sugar levels low then you wont
have to go to the doc
• When you do something it decreases an aversive stimulus
• Take ends and pain will decrease - reducing aversive stimulus
• Punishment (and response cost)
• Not as effective at increasing behaviour
• Cant eall use puishet e ellig et so e do’t ted to do this
• Ethical problems: punishing patients?
• Punishing is when you apply aversive stimulus and therefore they are less likely to
engage in the behv
• Response cost: when you remove a competitive behv to reduce behv 4
• Social Cognitive Theory
• Based on Bandura (2001)
• Is based on a few different concepts but one of the core concepts is self-efficacy
• Self-effia defied as people’s eliefs i thei apait to eeise soe easue of
