infections:
• Peuostis ariii peuoia, Kaposi’s saroa, other OIs, or er lo leels of
CD4+ cells (<200/ml) virus induced cancer, or in the US they can get a diagnosis if
they have low levels of CD4 cells
• Viral load test: that can determines level the amount of HIV in the body
• In AIDS there is Damage to part of the immune system that fights viral infections – existing
antibodies usually still work - so the antibodies usually still work but HIV works by
attaching itself to the CD4 and replicating itself, it turns those cells into factories but they
don't take care of themselves so eventually they die - a virus injects itself in your genetic
code and your cells job is to only make viruses
• HIV attaches to CD4 and replicates itself, destroying the cells function
• HIV Medications
• Combination Antiretroviral Therapy (cART) – its Different classes of drugs that interfere
ith HIV repliatio, ad the take as part of oktail of 3+ drugs - the do’t take oe
drug but 2 3 types of drugs (ex. 2 pills of med A, 3 of med B)
• Nowadays one pill might have all the ingredients needed (this also makes adherence
easier as patients have less meds to take)
• the prob is that these meds:
• Appear to increase risk of CVD - so they can cause other types of diseases we talked
about
• Older cART medications have bad side-effects - older meds also had bad side effects like:
• Nausea, diarrhea
• Peripheral neuropathy where people get pain or numbness in their fingers, toes
• Lipodystrophy - still is found but is less often - its where people lose the fat under
their skin in their cheeks and arms but then gain fat in their visora of between their
organs so they would have a bit of a bloated quality - a man who may look like he
has a pregnant belly but sunk in cheeks
• Lipo: lypids
• Dystrophy: not throwing right - so too much fat in one area and but not enough in
another

It looks a lot like the cvd thing - depression is a killer when it comes to hiv: psychological risk factors for hiv transmission.
