There are unfair things occurring in our health fair system and we want to address these
problems. There is a field called Public Health and Public Heath's duty is supposed to be:
• The siee ad at of pootig health, peetig disease, pologig life ad
ipoig uality of life though the ogaized effots of soiety - this is a governmental
approach. A lot of public health was created in a socialist ethos because they realized that
govt can do certain things much more effectively than the private sector had been doing
• The govt got actively involved in public health in the US - they have a strong public health
agency called the Centers for Disease Control. Canada only had a public health agency in
the last 10-15 years so we've been behind. In public health we use city, provincial, and
federal public health
• How does public health work? - Health protection
• 5 major functions of Public Health - the 5 functions of PH include:
• Health Protection. It's The assurance of safe food and water, the regulatory
framework for control of infectious diseases, and protection from environmental
threats are essential to the Public Health mandate and form much of the body of
current public health legislation worldwide.
• This means: one of the first things we did in PH is that we designed safer drinking
water and saver sewerage system. What happened in the gutter is that urine/feces
would go down the gutter instead of flowing down the street. This was a nice
innovation we had but then people thought how about we have a place for this stuff
to go instead of flowing into the river or the lake. Now we have systems that treat
the waste from the toilets and that's a big difference from when waste would flow
down your streets. So this was one of the first things they addressed when they
found out about germs and that they exist in feces/and in urine to some extent.
They decided to remove this waste from the river supply which is where we get our
drinking supply from. They created safer drinking water in Canada, saver sewerage
system in Canada, created saver food to eat where it's clean and doesn't have feces
or any bacteria -- so safer food and water but also control of infectious diseases so if
we think about how do we have antibiotics and systems for identifying when a new
flu is coming around, we have system for identifying it but this health protection is
doing something to protect us; making sure there are vaccinations, making sure
there are effective measures to combat infectious diseases.
• There's also health surveillance which allows us to know if there's a problem. Early
recognition:
• Health Surveillance allows for early recognition of outbreaks, disease trends, health
factors, and cases of illness which in turn allows for earlier intervention and lessened
