PSY 607 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Anterograde Amnesia, Retrograde Amnesia, Mammillary Body
Document Summary
Cns stimulants = cocaine + methamphetamines (nicotine is also a stimulant but it is not like these two) Cns depressants = opiates (heroin) + barbiturates + alcohol but route of administration is slow so no o. d. *almost impossible to overdose on nicotine given the amount available we have/can administer to ourselves. O. d. response of stimulants = increased heart beat, seizure, death. *give drugs that block both dopamine and norepinephrine receptors. O. d. response of depressants = respiratory failure, coma, death. *if opiates, give drugs that block opioid receptor sites (e. g. naltrexone) Event fit individuals can succumb to powerful psychoactive drugs (e. g. nba player who died of cocaine o. d. ) Hallucinogens (lsd, mushrooms, dmt, masculine, salvia) do not produce overdose + neurotoxic effects. Solvents (household products) = huffing can cause brain damage at the neuronal level (e. g. inhalants) They dissolve fatty tissues in the brain and neurons cannot access oxygen. Can cause lasting brain damage after only single dose/episode of use.
