2 kinds of attention: selective attention. Our attempt to withdraw from certain aspects of our sensory environment with the aim of focusing on other aspects of our environment. Describe our attempts to do more than one thing at: divided attention once. Ex: listening to lecture while making comments on facebook. Cherry (1953: conducted pioneering work into cocktail party effect. How selective is selective attention: participants listened to 2 different passages in each ear at the same time and were asked to only attend to female voice, then asked information about the male voice. 33% of individuals were able to report hearing their own name in unattended ear so semantic (meaning) information must get through to unattended channel: attention operated on basis of physical characteristics. But dear aunt jane: proves that attention takes in information then put together to make a meaning late selection theory.
